Tips to Improve and Increase Traffic and Followers

Here are twenty valuable tips to get your hubs moving in the right direction.

1.FOLLOW - Follow and support your followers. Plain and simple.

2. FAN MAIL - Leave Fan Mail. Hubbers can be a sentimental bunch – leave fan mail and let the hubber know why you are following. You will likely get followed back if you leave warm fan mail.

3. COMMENT - If someone took the time to comment on your hub it would be nice for you to comment on one of his or hers as well. Not always an easy task, but one you can build on during down time. Note – I like to pick one of my followers’ older hubs. It helps bring it to the forefront again. Also, did you know that when you comment on your own hub it brings it back to the front feed page? This way you are acknowledging and thanking your followers while also bringing it back to the news feed.

4. SOCIALIZE - Take part in the camaraderie of HubPages. I tend to stay out of the HP Forums – I’m not quite brave enough. I socialize on Twitter and Facebook. There are also several forums out in the WWW. Just google your favorite topic and include the word forum. I'm sure you will find a forum that suits your niche.

5. TWEET - Join Twitter and find fellow hubbers. Everyone likes a retweet. It’s a great way to support each other. I’ve caught some awesome hubs through Twitter that I would have never caught on my HP news feed. If you spot a tweet from a fellow hubber click retweet - let's support each other. This is a great way to gain followers and supporters for yourself and fellow hubbers.

6. FACEBOOK - Join Facebook and create a page with your pen name – many have their own Pages to promote their work. Many hubbers have groups where you can share your hubs. This is a great way to circulate your hubs on Facebook.

7. BLOG - Create a Blog for organizing and promoting your hubs. Some hubbers have blogs for each of their respective topics. These are great for backlinks and gaining new followers.

8. REFERRAL TRACKERS - Create referral trackers for ALL of your links. This is the ONLY way to earn credit if someone signs up as a hubber. If they joined HP through one of your referral trackers then you get a percentage of their HP revenue.

9. SHARE - If you really like a hub you have read SHARE IT! Your followers might find it interesting as well. By the way - be considerate when sharing your own work on the news feed. I've seen hubbers share over 5 hubs at a time (daily) - this only makes me want to un-follow. If you keep up with your comments you won't have a need to share often. However, it is a wise idea to share something that has been buried away with no views after a week or so. By then you have new followers that might find the hub interesting - if not then it is time to reflect on it and figure out what you need to do to revise it.

10. EDIT – I don’t care how good you are. Mistakes happen. I have read my hubs multiple times and I am still shocked to find grammatical errors weeks after they have been published.

11. FORMAT – I LOVE formatting my hubs. Make sure to add effective sub-titles and images. You want to guide your reader through your hub. Learn how to make your own headers. Play with the photo and text capsules. Yes, your content is the most important, but dress it up a bit.

12. PHOTOS – Take the time to dress your text. Look for photos, which will support your theme. Nice looking hubs are promoted. Who doesn't like eye candy? Just keep it relevant. Check out the HP Learning Center to make sure you are not committing any photo violations. For example, obvious watermarks such as the @ in front of the image WILL BE FLAGGED. Don't even try it. Regardless, it cheapens the quality of your hubs.

13. LINK – Link your hubs. As you build your portfolio of hubs you will begin to see a pattern of favorite topics. At the end of your hub you can add a list of similar hubs for your readers to choose from. You can also help promote a fellow hubber. Many will return the favor. Use these links in your e-mails, external forums and social networks. This helps feed and fuel your content on Google!

14. RESEARCH – Once you've decided on a topic take the time to research the competition. Try a keyword search on HubPages and see what has been written on the same topic. This can help you fine-tune your angle. It is also a great way to include links of fellow hubbers in your hub. Follow and support hubbers in your topic area. Many are willing to support each other and link to each others' hubs.

15. HTML – ok, I’m not going to make you learn an entire course in HTML, but the greatest tip is one by Sinea Pies, Her hub teaches you to set up your links to open in another window. Why is this important? You gain a longer impression, which means money. The viewer does not lose sight of your page. They are simply viewing the link you supplied in another window. When they close that window YOUR hub will still be there. This gives them an opportunity to leave your hub open while they click your links, encourages them to possibly leave a comment, vote and/or bookmark your hub.

16. ANALYZE - Ok, I admit it - I AM a hub stalker. Not in the evil sense of course. About once a day I click the "HUBBER" links at the very top of the HubPages toolbar. This will take you to the crème de la crème page. This page lists hubbers in the order of Hubber Score. I want to know WHO these people are and HOW they got there. I check EVERYTHING. I click their latest hub, which is linked next to their pic and I check the actual URL title. Why? SEO!!! These pros KNOW their SEO and many of them only use keywords for their URL title and then change the title when they edit and create their capsules. Then I play detective. I read the first paragraph to see how they incorporated the url-title and keywords into the text. I also check the words that they tagged and what they linked to. Then, I analyze text length, quality and purpose of content, plus I review the Amazon and Ebay capsules. I also look for any strategies in how the hub is formatted. If I make it to their profile and they listed their Twitter account I follow it and watch their tweet habits. The best lessons are by observing the masters.

17. YAHOO! – Do you yahoo? You should! Yahoo! Answers can help drive traffic your related hubs. Build a profile on Yahoo and start answering questions. Find the questions related to your topics and hubs. You can include your links and it will greatly help generate more traffic.

18. TITLES & KEYWORDS – I am by no means an SEO expert. I’ll give you a few links later, but be sure to include your keywords and title within the first ¼ of your hub. This will help keep your hub in the search engines.

19. INDEX – After you have published a hub you need to copy the URL link and then go to Google and paste the link into the search box – click search. This step helps throw your link into the search system. If your hub and link pop up on the search list you have been indexed. If your hub does not pop up right away try again in about 24 hrs. It should show up after the search engines update. Make sure you do this with your profile as well. I’ve heard others say they repeat this process on Bing and Yahoo engines - couldn’t hurt.

20. LEARN the KEYWORD GOOGLE TOOL – Many hubbers do not even know this exists, but it is a valuable tool. Google would not have even taken the time to create it for FREE if they didn’t find its mutual value.

Don't be the weakest link! Try these links for success!

Dedicated to all my fellow hubbers! Thank you! :)

Couple of hours ago I listened to a hubpages podcast "Self-Optimization-for-Writers" And here I get to read this useful article.

I have been following some of the points you have mentioned here and others are entirely new to me. Thanks for sharing these tips.

Thanks for the information on how to build better and more interesting hubs. Like the most your advice on becoming a stalker, sounds too simple but never thought of it. I'll have to do some research.

I've started a couple of blogs, i wonder do you write separate articles or just summaries and link to hubpages...Not sure there.

Great hub! and thanks for the info!

missolive profile image

missolive Hub Author 6 months ago

Vinaya - I think that is great that you listened to an SEO podcast and then found this. I sincerely hope you find all of these points helpful. Be sure to check the links - they are very important and useful.

GoGreenTips - Blogs are awesome. I won't add my Blog link here, but you can find it on my profile. As for how I post links on my blog - I write a new summary and mini-review of the hub. I include a link to the hub as well as to the author's profile. Do not ever copy any of the hubber's content other than the title with link. Stalking was the only word I could come up with - it sounds horrible, but I only do it to analyze strategies and techniques for posting and marketing. Best wishes to you.

Thanks, It would be nice to leave some fan mail for others to read, Also when leaving a hub comment, it would be great to look at the hubber's page and comment at one of the hubs.

I did not think about face book connection, but hopefully I will try to do that very soon.

This is an amazing hub. There are several things in here that I try to do on a regular basis, but you definately caught my attention on a couple of these. For instance, HTML... I didn't know there was a way to get the link to open in another window. I am going to have to see if I can figure this out. Also, Indexing-- I am going to go check that out now cause I am curious! This was great!

barbiegirl28 - the link opening in another window is a pretty neat tip and you can thank Sinea Pies for that one. I've included her hub - the steps are pretty clear. I took me about two times to finally get it right. Indexing was just recently introduced to me and it is always a good feeling when your hub actually pops up - it means Google has FOUND you - neat! What a terrific list of tips on improving hub traffic. I like how some of your tips pertain to getting traffic from fellow hubbers, but also the good seo tips for getting search engine traffic later. Hubbers can often give a hub a nice boost in the beginning, but for the long-haul SEO really matters.

I really appreciate your inclusion of links to two of my hubs: "SEO Techniques..." and "Drive Traffic to your HubPages..."

I noticed after publishing these two hubs and a third one on how to get hits by using keywords in 5 often-overlooked places, that many readers of these hubs actually used my advice. I am sure you will notice a great response from your list of 20 tips, as well.

hallei - I am very glad to see you came by. I'm glad to share my hubs with you.

Kristin Halsted - It can be a bit overwhelming and it can be hard to keep up at times. As for your question - how to share.

Just above the comment bar is a link that says share (same as Twitter and Facebook) Click the link and it will give you a few choices. The FIRST choice is Share with followers. Once you click that it will bring the hub to the front of the news feed for all of your followers.

Hope that helps! :)

This is a very interesting hub and once again I am impressed by all you do. I haven’t been very proactive about getting traffic, hence I have about a quarter of the followers you do, though I’ve been on HP several months longer. Some of your tips sound very easy - for instance pasting hub titles into google. So I think I’ll start with those easy ones first!

Two things I have found increased my traffic within Hubpages hugely are taking part in the weekly topic inspiration and the recent contest. I also really enjoyed the challenge as well.

Incidentally, I’m not sure how much relevance the Hubbers scores have as far as traffic goes, mine used to be between 88 and 92 and then went up to 94 when I answered a question by making a hub, and it has stayed between 94 and 98 ever since, so I think it may be partially connected to participation in things like the WTI. I gather there’s also a random element in it. I’m sure you will have more traffic than I do but your score is currently lower - and that could change by the time you read this comment! :) I’m just pointing this out because it doesn’t necessarily mean that if someone is on the first few pages they have got a better way with hubs than you do.

Melovy - great comment. As for followers - I lucked out with my Hub of the Day. I gained over 150 followers during that week and 6 new hubbers signed up with my referral tracker on that hub. (Thank you Lord and HP!)

I tried the challenges, but my schedule at school is tough enough. I'm sure I'll whip out more hubs during my holiday break and in the summer. I know forums really help, but I've been reluctant. I'm seeing quite a bit of negativity on certain forums. I guess I need to find the right forum niche for me. As for scores - the week I added my blog, twitter and backlinks I stayed at 96. Now I'll fluctuate between an 88 - 94. Then again I have not been as active on my Blog/twitter (work has me busy). I get your point on the traffic issue. Yet I can't help but wonder why/how some hubbers have a hub score of 100 as well as a 100 hubber score to match. Well deserved I might add. I'm talking about the veterans that really put out quality hubs with over 1k followers.

Incidentally, just an observation. My Hub of the Day had a hubscore of mid 80's during the HofD week and the traffic was incredible. Now that traffic has been cut by over 70% the hubscore is up in the 90's - go figure. Less traffic - higher score???

Thanks again Melovy - always nice to spot you around the hub, FB and twitter. Continued best wishes to you.

I hve read a number of hubs and on the forum about the Hubscores. All these hubbers stated that nobody knows how it works and if it is actually related to your activity on your hub and/or traffic. Also the relevant to or on your earnings.

You forgot: Use your hub widget (on other sites) then promote that site, write the site up as an introduction to your hubs, sort of a profile page one page site (yourname.com)...

also I get massive traffic from forum posting (good posts get traffic, boring or negative posts get nada), and creating or/and asking questions- if you get a good thread going in the Q/A posts you get fans, visitors, and more...

You can write a hub about something awesome, then post a question on the topic, you can actually post a question then post your own answer to it as well (after posting it you haven't' used up your "answer this question" right-

let people get in and start talking/giving their posts, then bling in thanking everyone for their great ideas- this is the only way to leave comments after the fact and you get one shot to post your answer and thanks-

you can also mention you made a hub answering the topic and encourage others to do the same- in just mentioning you wrote a hub about the topic others may click your picture/avatar to see what you said in the hub if the thread is popular-

great traffic booster (never leave a link to or promote your hub just say that you wrote one- let curiosity sell them on wanting to read it.

I follow you but don't remember if I left you fan mail- I don't agree that if someone doesn't leave fan mail but adds you that they don't follow your stuff- I follow a lot of your stuff but don't think I left a message (never know what to say!), besides once followed your hubs are in the feed so they likely will follow your work- not commenting on all of it doesn't mean they don't read them... but to each their own (opinion)... you post alot of hubs so I don't think a follower would have a chance not to see your work in the feed :)

Kudos for your community help- you should get some product hubs up- that's where 95% of my paying hubs are- product hubs sell because they entice people (through informing them as they are likely there to research before buying something) to learn more about something they already want and the monetization is just the door they need... traffic flows to product pages more than helping hubber topics- not that you should not post them but in the beginning 3.5 years ago that's what I did but until I made more product oriented hubs (balancing my portfolio) I only got hubber traffic and made 0.00 the traffic you want for earning is off hubpages not on- although again hubbers tend to also send you some organic traffic relayed, but likely that comes from their product hubs! (or news etc... that's timeless).

Good Luck!

Some good tips here, but I find the two most important to be community participation and SEO. Forum use will get some HP traffic, which while it won't earn much (hubbers don't click ads), is a source of help and satisfaction.

Good SEO use will get you the traffic that pays. Learn how to optimize your hubs for organic traffic.

And of course, write good, informative hubs. This you are doing - now join the forums and become a part of the community. Hint - stay out of the religion and political forums unless you have a VERY thick skin!

missolive profile image

missolive Hub Author 5 months ago

wilderness - thank you! I appreciate the additional tips. My SEO tactics have been proving to be effective. My education hubs are earning quite a bit of SEO (organic) traffic during the day and then I'll get more hub traffic in the evening.

I have been following the forums for quite a while now, but have been hesitant to jump in. As you well know - it has been a bit volatile lately. However, I see the benefit of joining in. I do want to become more involved with the forum community - actively at least. I'll jump out of the side lines soon enough :)

Thank again

B. Leekley profile image

B. Leekley Level 5 Commenter 5 months ago

Thanks for all the tips. I bookmarked this hub in my browser so I can keep coming back to it and learn it little by little.

In your point #2 you complain about people who follow your hubs and don't leave fan mail. You are being unfair. I am one of those people. I started hubbing last month and am following a handful of hubbers whose work impresses me. When I click Follow, I just have a first impression of quality, but I don't yet have enough familiarity with the hubber's work to know if my first impression will last or to make a general comment on his or her work, much less to write fan mail. I've figured that the proper time to write fan mail is later after I have been following that hubber for awhile. But when I went to your profile page this evening, I could not find where or how to send you fan mail. Where do I find that?

Re your point #5, I tried Twitter for awhile a few years ago but nobody I know uses it, so I was communicating with nobody. Also it ate up a lot of time revising a message until it fit in the tiny space allowed. What do you do different to make it not a waste of time? I do use Facebook daily.

Re your point #6, why do most hubbers use pen names instead of their real names?

In #9, by SHARE it, do you mean click the Twitter and Facebook button?

Re #10, if someone did not proofread their writing before publishing it as a hub page, they are not likely to do so later. I've been wondering if it is best to not comment on typos, grammatical errors, misspellings, and wrong word usage but rather to send a private message, since a Comment will become irrelevant once the minor error is corrected.

Anyway, I'm going to put your many good tips into practice.

missolive profile image

missolive Hub Author 5 months ago

Thank you rednickle - I agree with you 100%, but the tips in my hub will sure give us a running start and added visibility. Bottom line though - A hub must have quality text and information if it's going to maintain long-term traffic. I appreciate you stopping by to read and comment.

B. Leekley - wow what a comment! Thank you for reading and bookmarking. I did want to respond...

point #2 - ouch, complain is such a strong word, but I'll sorta take it. Followers don't HAVE to leave 'fan mail' , but it sure is nice to know why someone is following you. As for your question, I have noticed some profiles have a small box for fan mail. My profile does not seem to have that and I really don't know why. It does not seem to be on everyone's profile. Traditionally though the fan box will open once you click follow.

point #5 - Twitter is great once you get the hang of it. Feel free to check out my twitter profile - the link is on my HP profile. I managed to accumulate over 1,000 followers there in a short period of time so I do get traffic when I tweet. I do actually need to spend more time on that again.

point #6 - Although I use a pen name / username for HubPages all my hubs end with my full name. I have created a 2nd Facebook page just for HubPages. I'd like to keep them separate. Believe it or not I have never posted a hub to my 'real name' Facebook account. I look at it as business vs personal

point #9 - share it, just above the comment box is an icon that says share. When you click that icon it opens up to more options. On the top left it will say 'share with followers' once you click that your followers will see the hub in the HP feed.

point #10 - I'll reread and tweak my hubs every now and then. Many hubbers completely revamp their whole hub due to seasons and what not. If I have ever seen a major error I usually send a private message, but I've seen others that post in the comments. The comment can always be deleted if the owner of the hub chooses.

Thank you for your questions and I hope I cleared up any questions you may have had.

Every now and then it is wise to check the stats for each hub and analyze the keywords. See if you need to adjust your title or summary to include searched words. Adding keywords into your text titles and photo titles really makes a difference as well. Continued best wishes-----uuuhhhmmmm I don't wanna grow up, can I have a cookie? :)

Dear Miss Olive - WOW! You must have read my mind. I write a few hubs a month but now that I have completed a course on Dalmatian culture I have a BUNCH of hubs in me just waiting to come out. I'll be sure to try all of your tips, one by one.

I've been around HubPages for about a year. Six months ago I made the jump from part time writer to full time freelancer and never looked back. Fantastic!. Now, I've gotten to a new place where I can hardly wait to just write my own stuff full time. With concentrated efforts, I'm sure this will come. HubPages is a great way to improve writing skills, while simultaneously earning money. As another Hubber pointed out, if you aren't getting about 4000 views a day you won't be making much money.

Thanks to hubs like this, I am seeing that it's all possible, and that there is a method (HTML and SEO) to the madness. Having followers is more important than I originally thought. Thanks for your very valuable and helpful Hub - great job. Voted up and across.

snapgerries - Tweeting and retweeting is a great way to share hubs. It also reaches out to a larger crowd if you use good hash tags. Dear Miss Olive! Yes, "dear!". I tried the URL tip for about ten of my Hubs so far, entering them into the Google search engine. In only 24 hours my traffic has quadrupled. OK, I've also written two or three new hubs in the past two days, but I think this definitely helped. After I URL all my 70 hubs I will go on to the next tip. anglnwu - I'm glad you have found this hub as well. There are several little things we can do to help perk up our visibility. Thank you for the lovely comment and bookmark.

PDXKaraokeGuy - Hi J, thanks! I appreciate the link and the share. I'll be sure to check it out.

madmachio - you are quite welcome :)

Claudia Tello - I just wanted to clarify that you do not have to index your hubs. The search engines will eventually find you. Be sure to create Titles and sub-titles that the average internet 'searcher' will be looking for. Searching for your own keywords and finding your hubs gives you an idea of your ranking. However, searching for your actual title and url in the search bar does seem to help the bots find it sooner (just a theory though)

editorsupremo - thank you! I appreciate the votes and the sharing too! :)

brandsaur - I appreciate that- thanks for the votes and the share. Glad to hear your hubs are ranking and visible. Tweaking search friendly titles and sub-titles makes a HUGE difference as well.

Natashalh - Hi there, let me clarify. There is a time frame for a hub to make an 'impression' however the longer someone is on the page does NOT make you additional money. Google algorithms are a huge mystery, but the theory is that if someone searches an item and then comes upon your hub and visits/clicks - it does make an impact to your rank if they click on the link and stay on the hub for a while. You want to keep your readers as long as possible. This seems to show interest in your hub and Google seems to recognize that fact. I hope that makes sense. Suggestion, be sure to set up your Google Analytics and research things like bounce rates. These are things that Google ranks and most likely affects your ranking.
