Seek and Ye Shall Find Traffic!

Yahoo! Answers is a great way to improve traffic to your hubs, blogs and websites. Not only will it improve traffic it is fun too! You will be providing answers and you can also seek and find answers to your own questions as well. Building an account is free and easy. Once you advance beyond the first level any links you include will become active. These links can lead to the topics you write about. Thus, improving and generating traffic.

This hub will guide you through the quick sign-up process as well as tips for use.

Remember, seek, and ye shall find traffic!

How to Yahoo!

  1. Set up an account
  2. Ask Questions and Answer Questions
  3. Points and Levels
  4. Vote for Best Answer
  5. Tips & Tricks

Step 1. Register!

Registering on Yahoo! is SUPER easy. Yahoo! gives you a choice of creating a new account or signing up with a current account from Facebook, Google or Yahoo! Just remember that the name you use will be the name on your profile.

Click here to Register or Log in - Yahoo! Answers

Yahoo! Answers has MANY categories - You may click to enlarge

Browse Categories - Answer and Ask Questions

Once you have set up your account I encourage you to browse the categories on Yahoo! Answers. Find the areas that interest you the most. Most importantly - find the areas you write about! Use the keywords from your hubs, blogs or websites to find topics. As you continue your search you can begin answering or asking questions right away. "Best Answers" are chosen by the originator of the question and/or the voting public. Be sure to give great answers and include the link to your related hub. As readers seek answers and come across your response they just might click on your link as a source for additional information. Avoid being overly promotional and spammy. Yahoo! does have moderators and you want to be a good member of the community.

Note - Links will not appear hyperlinked until you reach 250 points (level 2). But, go ahead and include your links from the beginning and they will transpose when your level changes. It really does not take that long.

Points and Levels

How it works

  • Earn points and work your way up the ranks. Your primary goal should be to reach Level 2. Once you reach Level 2 your links will appear as an actual hyperlink to your respective sites or hubs.
  • Building up points is actually a rather easy process. Reaching Level 2 is doable in a very short period of time. I did it in less than two weeks with very little effort.
  • To the right of this text box are the point values as well as levels for you to evaluate the process.
  • Please be aware that you lose 5 points for every question that you ask. You might want to wait to ask questions until you reach Level 2.

Best Answer

Why do you want to be chosen as the Best Answer?

  • Your answer will be the first answer shown and will be featured as the Best Answer to the question
  • If your Best Answer is related to one of your hubs, blogs or sites you can include a link in your answer box (add the link when you answer the question - once the answer goes into voting or is chosen you can no longer edit it)

How do you get selected as Best Answer

  • voting - the Yahoo! community votes for the Best Answer. Incidentally, you earn 1 point every time you vote. You also earn 10 points if your answer is chosen. Yes, you CAN vote for your own answer (once).
  • author selection - the original author of the question can also select your answer as the Best Answer. This process supersedes community voting.

Tips!

Yahoo! Tips & Tricks

  • Give good quality answers. If you have a related hub topic include the link in your answer's source box as a reference. (only include relevant links or you will eventually be banned)
  • When adding hub links be sure it includes a referral tracker. You want to get credit for anyone that signs up for HubPages. A referral tracker is the only way to assure you recruited a new hubber.
  • Be courteous. If something is inappropriate flag it. Don't rant and rave with an answer against a fellow community member. A rude or snippy answer puts you at risk of losing your account. If something is inappropriate just flag it and move on.
  • Be sure your answers and/or questions are clear and concise. Keep in mind that the purpose of Yahoo! Answers is to provide information to the community.
  • Check your "My activity" page and keep up with voting. Remember, once your item goes into voting you can vote as well. Voting usually closes on the 7th day unless the author chooses your answer as the Best Answer first.
  • Once you get the hang of Yahoo! Answers get SEO and keyword crafty. Build your answers around the SEO/keywords in your hubs. This combined with your link will make for a terrific back-link to your hub. Remember, Yahoo! is a MAJOR search engine and your creative answers can get you to the top of the search engine page. Use your FREE resources to the fullest!
  • REMEMBER DO NOT COPY YOUR HUBS! Do not copy your hub as an answer. It is against our HubPages TOS and you can lose your hub. Get creative instead and formulate an effective answer as well as including a link to your hub. Don't forget - the whole idea is to generate traffic TO your hub.

Remember, Seek, and ye shall find traffic!

A fantastic review and a detailed insight of what Yahoo Answers is all about. I have used Yahoo Answers in the past and found it to be an extremely interactive community. It is amazing to see how many people chip in to help you out, isn't it? However I have also noticed that it is not entirely free of spam. I'm bookmarking this hub in case someone I know needs help with the nitty gritties of how Yahoo Answers works.

What is your experience with Yahoo answers? Does it drive significant traffic to your hubs?

princesswithapen - Glad to see you came by. Yahoo! answers has given me new traffic. I created a referral tracker for yahoo and am seeing daily growth from it. I've only been on it for about 3 weeks and have only linked 4 hubs. The traffic is not a super highway, but it HAS made a difference. Also, I have noticed that the hubs I linked to are now on the first page when I search my keywords on Google and Yahoo. I really think it is because of Yahoo answers. Will update after a few more weeks. Regardless, I do think it is a great tool for generating external traffic.

Thank you for bookmarking

dinkan53 - In my 2 months at HP I'm realizing more and more that I need to generate external traffic. A veteran hubber suggested Yahoo to me. She is an avid gamer and writes about games - she claims Yahoo gives her about 500 hits daily. Of course she is writing on a hot topic. Thanks for the votes and bookmark!

rajan! Happy to see you! I have a feather from you - yeah! I'm always glad to share. Your healthy hubs would do awesome on Yahoo! MANY people are looking for the benefits of the foods you write about. I'll message you FB with more details. :)

Lapse - Very glad to offer a helpful tip to a fellow hubber. Happy it was an easy read as well.

MissOlive, wonderful article with very useful information for everyone. We should become contacts on YA. This was one of the first sites that I went on, way before HP and I loved it! I haven't been on for over a year, because I got so caught up with HP, but I should get back in touch with it. BTW, my name is prairieprincess on there, too, if you want to add me as a contact. prairieprinces - I'm enjoying Yahoo - very similar to Webanswers in its format. However, you do earn Google adsense on WA. I've already located you on Yahoo and have saved you as a contact. I have sent you a message through FB as well. Glad you found this useful. Looking forward to collaborating on YA :)

rajan - sent you a message on FB as well.

Seeker7 - YA is a great way to add traffic. My matcha hubs had an extra 100 views each this week due to Yahoo. It's not HUGE traffic, but I can see the potential. Thanks for the votes and comment.

This is very cool. I once was trying out WebAnswers. This is where you could actually imput Google Adsense and get paid for your answers. I doubt Yahoo would do the same thing, but I stopped using WebAnswers when I realzied that some people were losing their Google Adsense account because of it!

Great hub, I might have to try that out if I ever find some extra time!

missolive profile image

missolive Hub Author 6 months ago

Patkay - Thanks - Glad to help

Dolores - your comment is a great testimonial as to how this would drive traffic. Thank you

teaches12345 - You are quite welcome - glad you stopped by

barbergirl28 - You will find YA to be very similar to WA with the exception of earning Google Adsense. It would be more of a traffic tool. Hey, now you have me worried about my WebAnswers account. I use that too! People are losing their Google Adsense? I need to research that. eek! As for extra time - tell me about it. We'd be millionaires if we could bottle it and sell it!

barbergirl28 profile image

barbergirl28 Level 8 Commenter 6 months ago

Ha ha - I hear you about the extra time. I stopped using WA after I heard people talking about losing their google adsense. I guess it is too easy to have illegitimate clicks. One of the people I was following was using the site and got her adsense banned so I just stay away. I have come to far and am so close to payout and I don't want to give it back. Will be watching for your WebAnswers article on whether it is safe! ;) No rush - when you have time that is! :)

I used to use Yahoo answers. I just do not like the fact that you do not earn money from Yahoo for answering the questions. I love WebAnswers as they share AdSense income. I also created a very detailed hub about WebAnswers you can check out if you are interested.

Now I am going to do this as driving traffic to my hubs is what its all about. Very informative hub thanks for the information here.

This is great information. I have been writing Yahoo Answers for awhile now and it does generate hub traffic. The only thing is the links on Yahoo Answers are "nofollow" links so they won't necessarily build up as backlinks.

But traffic is traffic, and like you say it really is a lot of fun. There even was a Yahoo question once about where to buy a certain product which I knew was in one of my Ebay capsules. I answered the question and made an Ebay sale, as well.

I have enough points that any links I add are hyperlinked, but it never occurred to me to include them before I had enough points so that they would eventually be automatically hyperlinked when the point accumulation was enough. This was excellent advice and an excellent article.

~voted up and useful~

missolive profile image

missolive Hub Author 5 months ago

Great comment ktrapp - I have had more traffic. I appreciate the votes :)

BTW - I kind of tested the whole "nofollow" and did a keyword search on Yahoo of one of my YA links to my hub. I searched for the keywords in my link and I added the word "answer" - the link to my YA link did show up. (did that make any sense? lol)

Regardless, YA is great for traffic.

I added RedGage today - I like what I'm seeing.

DonnaCosmato profile image

Very useful and informative! I never knew Yahoo answers could be a backlinking tool - it is always nice to add another tool to my resource tool box. Voted up.

ktrapp profile image

ktrapp Level 7 Commenter 5 months ago

missolive - Go to one of your pages on Yahoo where you answered a question and posted a link. Then in your browser click view/source or view/page source. You will now be looking at all the code for the Yahoo page. Next, find your link's code. To find it easily search for the word missolive using CTRL F (or Command F on a mac). You will notice that rel ="nofollow" is included in the link's code. What that means is that when search engine robots crawl the web they don't follow those links, so they are not truly backlinks.

But Yahoo Answers is still a very valuable tool as you point out for getting traffic and so I use it regardless of whether or not it provides me with an actual back link. Maybe search engine robots don't follow the link, but humans do. And these humans may then become HubPage writers (using the referral tracking code that you have written about), share one of your hubs on their social network, or buy a product or click on an ad. I have gotten quite a bit of traffic this way.

Great hub!

missolive profile image

ktrapp - you TOTALLY read my mind. I was going to ask you how to do this. I knew it was somewhere on HP. This is extremely helpful. I'm going to use this and evaluate the various links I have on other sites.

Yes, Yahoo! answers is great for traffic, but not necessarily one for backlinks.

Thanks again - I greatly appreciate this and I hope the followers and readers of this hub read your comment. It deserves a hub of its own. Perhaps I'll add a little author's note at the end of the hub.

twoseven- I don't think you have to worry about your links on Yahoo Answers being a bad reflection of your hubs or sub domain. Just be sure to select relevant topics when you reference your links. Thanks for reading and commenting. Good luck to you

This is a brilliant idea. Thank you for sharing this. I am definitely going to try this out. I love answering questions on hubpages and when I google things yahoo answers always come up in the search.
