Preparation, Ingredients and Materials Needed

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. (I use my toaster oven)

  • 1 - 9 x 9 pan or Pyrex dish
  • non-stick spray (I use the generic Wal-Mart brand 'Great Value' butter flavor)
  • 2 - 21oz. cans of pie filling (I use Lucky Leaf Premium - apple)
  • 1 box cake mix (I use Duncan Hines Decadent Apple Caramel)
  • 1 stick of butter
  • cinnamon sugar blend (I use McCormick)
  • powdered nutmeg (I use McCormick)
  • spoon for spreading
  • knife for slicing butter

variation ideas -

Spray a 9 x 9 pan or glass dish with cooking spray

  • Sprinkle the top of the pie filling with cinnamon-sugar.

note - if you use a berry pie filling you will want to skip the cinnamon and nutmeg. Cinnamon and nutmeg will complement apples and pears, but not berries

I used Duncan Hines Decadent Caramel Apple cake mix for my recipe

This mix comes with two packets. One is the standard cake mix and the other is the caramel apple mix.

Duncan Hines has created a new series of cake mixes. These mixes feature an additional pouch created to enhance the flavor of standard cake mix.

Add your cake mix

Evenly add the caramel apple topping over the apples. Take care in spreading the mix over all of the apples. Make sure to include the corners and edges.

Evenly add the basic cake mix over the previous mix. Make sure to spread as evenly as possible. I only needed about 1/2 a bag. (Save the remaining mix for another recipe)

Roll the edges of the tops down and store in a ziploc baggie for future use. I might add it to my pancake or waffle mix in the near future.

The nice thing about a 9 x 9 pans is they usually fit in a toaster oven. This saves time, space and energy.

Place your prepared 9 x 9 pan into the oven. Check for doneness at 20 - 25 minutes. You want the topping to be a warm golden brown.

Just Ask Susan 5 months ago

This looks good. How much butter would you say this takes? Will have to try this soon.

JT Walters 5 months ago

Looks awesome Missolive!!

But I make my own apple mixture and cake if I wish?

Will it turn out the same?

Thanks.

JT

missolive 5 months ago

Hi Susan - in the picture it looks like a LOT of butter. I used one full stick. It is incredibly easy. A great activity for young chefs too! Thanks for stopping by :)

missolive 5 months ago

JTWallters - if you only use just the dry ingredients for your cake mixture it should come out just fine. I bet this would taste amazing with FRESH ingredients!

Thank you!

missolive 5 months ago

JTWalters - I wanted to clarify my answer to your question :)

make your dry mixture for your cake mix (without your wet ingredients- eggs, oil) sprinkle your dry cake mixture over your homemade fruit mixture. This should work out just fine :)

JT Walters 5 months ago

Thanks missolive,

If i make for this holiday season I will let you know how it turns out with the fresh ingredients. I would just use the same filing I use for my apple strudel. All pretty simple stuff. Home made cakes, to me and my friends, are always to superior. I made a mistake serving it once and now I am not allowed to severe them premade cake mixtures anymore.

What are friends for?

:)

LOL,

JT

missolive 5 months ago

JTWalters - This brought back a funny memory that tugs on my heartstrings. My grandmother ALWAYS made everything from scratch. I remember making a cake when I was in high school. She came over and I proudly served her some. She LOVED it! Then she asked for the recipe. I literally ran to the trash can and dug up the Betty Crocker cake mix box and showed it to her. She snatched it out of my hand and smacked me on the bottom with it. "No granddaughter of mine is going to make a cake out of a box!", she exclaimed. She laughed at my wide eyes and said, "you little shite this tastes good"

I will ALWAYS remember that story :) Plus, she really would say shite instead of....well, you know :)

Your friends are VERY lucky to have you JT :)

StephanieBCrosby 5 months ago

I like this recipe. It is much simpler than the apple pie recipe that I use and almost as simple as the apple ricotta cake I make.

missolive 5 months ago

Thank you Stephanie!

That apple ricotta cake sounds good! I'm going to see if you have a hub on it! If you don't then I say - get writing! :)

capricornrising 5 months ago

Fabulous. And a question: did someone else take your photos as you made the recipe? Or did you put your camera on a timer?

missolive 5 months ago

capricornrising - I actually set my MAC laptop on the counter and took the pictures with Photo Booth. It has an audible countdown before it captures the image. I did have to hold up the laptop for some of the angles though. Also, I did get some funny looks from my family as they walked in and out of the room :)

Great question! :)

capricornrising 5 months ago

Aha! I wonder whether my IPhone has a similar feature somewhere. I suspect not. Oh well...

Seeker7 5 months ago

This is wonderful! I adore any kind of sweets/puddings/cakes with apples in them and I love any kind of ice cream!! Vanilla ice cream sounds great to put on the top, but my young nephew wants a dollop of vanilla and a dollop of chocolate!! Kids! Great hub + voted up!

Ps - my nephew (aged 7) has just asked me to say to you that he thinks your recipe looks 'beautiful'! LOL!!

missolive 5 months ago

Seeker7 and nephew :)

Whenever you have a choice just say YES!

Whenever I would serve dessert for my family I would ask my dad, "Do you want chocolate or vanilla?" his answers was ALWAYS "yes"

I am VERY glad you think my recipe looks beautiful!

This is my go-to/standby dessert. We like doing pineapple and cherry together with a yellow or white cake mix. I stock up on cake mixes when they're on sale (and we like Betty Crocker because of the BoxTops 4 Education). Haven't tried apple yet, but I'm sure it would be good, straight out of the oven, with vanilla ice cream melting over it!

Vickie - That is a fantastic idea! Save money and get the box tops - cool! Doesn't vanilla ice cream over this sound fabulous? yum!
